Welcome to InHome Rehabilitation Teams

Osteoarthritis is a condition that can impact any joint in the body, occurring when joint surface damage becomes irreparable. Those with osteoarthritis often suffer from joint pain and decreased mobility. Unlike other types of arthritis, osteoarthritis affects only the joints and not internal organs. It is the most prevalent form of arthritis and affects both men and women equally.

Osteoarthritis is characterized by joint pain, varying levels of functional limitations, and a reduced quality of life. The swelling and tenderness in affected joints can hinder an individual’s ability to perform everyday tasks such as washing, dressing, cooking, and cleaning. Managing a chronic condition like osteoarthritis can make self-care challenging and significantly impact a person's motivation. Our Occupational Therapists are skilled professionals who can assist individuals in adapting their daily routines to improve their quality of life, reducing pain and fatigue.

Our Occupational Therapists are dedicated healthcare professionals committed to helping individuals with osteoarthritis live their lives to the fullest. They possess specialized knowledge and skills to adjust environments, enabling individuals with osteoarthritis to accomplish necessary and desired activities. With a comprehensive understanding of anatomy, pathology, and the physical and emotional demands of daily life, our Occupational Therapists can offer effective arthritis management strategies. These include advising on joint-friendly techniques, recommending assistive devices and adaptations, and modifying daily activities to ease the strain on joints.

Challenges Related to Osteoarthritis

The symptoms of osteoarthritis vary greatly from person to person and between different joints. Osteoarthritis mostly occurs in the knee, hips, spine and small joints in the hands, however almost any joint can be affected. Osteoarthritis can lead to stiffness and pain in the joints which can affect an individual's abilities to complete the following:

  • Washing and dressing
  • Mobilising inside and outside the home
  • Driving
  • Work activities
  • Sleeping
  • Leisure and social activities
  • Household duties- cooking and cleaning

Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition that affects an individual's ability to perform daily activities. Our Occupational Therapists employ various treatment approaches to enhance independence and overall life satisfaction for those with osteoarthritis. They conduct thorough assessments of an individual's condition and its impact on daily living. Based on this evaluation, they identify issues and collaboratively develop a therapeutic plan. Treatments may include practical advice on grading activities, providing aids and adaptations, and more.

Our Occupational Therapists also evaluate an individual's work environment to determine how osteoarthritis affects their job performance. For instance, if someone with osteoarthritis in their hands struggles with computer tasks, our therapists can recommend supportive aids like wrist and hand braces to reduce strain. This intervention helps individuals maintain their independence at work.
